Annika grew up in Colorado, spending a great deal of time in the foothills and mountains with her family. From hiking and camping in the summer to skiing in the winter, outdoor activities became an important part of Annika's childhood and served as the foundation to her beliefs as an environmentalist. During her undergraduate studies at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, Annika began to more fully appreciate the magnitude of local and global sustainability challenges, and the responsibility individuals, businesses, and communities bear to drive change. The significance of that experience went beyond formal education; it showed her ways to pursue professional interests positively affecting human and natural systems around her.

Annika focused primarily on the policy and social influences of sustainability before expanding her perspective through design at MCAD. She believes the environmental movement depends heavily on communicating and showcasing the mutual benefits generated through adopting environmentally-conscious approaches, and making it accessible to everyone.
Sustainability Statement: Seek to help people transform their habits and mindsets and see the wide range of solutions available when protecting natural systems and emulating their successful frameworks. |

The Peace of Wild Things

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear? Who made the grasshopper? This grasshopper, I mean- the one who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is eating sugar out of my hand, who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down- who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes. Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face. Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away. I don't know exactly what a prayer is. I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day. Tell me, what else should I have done? Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? |
